The fig symbolizes fertility, prosperity and security.

The fig tree, or more appropriately, the fig family (ficus) has been of deep cultural and religious significance since ancient times in many traditions.  It is mentioned extensively in the old and new testaments, the Quran, the Vedas and the Indian epics Mahabarata and Ramayana. The Torah is often compared to the fig tree.  It is said that as figs are picked over a period of time (unlike most plants and trees whose fruit ripen all together), so is the Torah which you learn some today and more tomorrow; you cannot learn it all at once.

A genus of the fig family, the Sacred Fig (ficus religiosa) is held in devout reverence in Buddhism.  Siddhartha Gautama (Lord Buddha) is believed to have achieved enlightenment while meditating under a Sacred Fig tree.  A sapling of that very tree which was planted in 288 BC  (Sri Maha Bodhi, Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka) is the center of Buddhist worship and devotion to this day.  It is believed to be the oldest living tree in the world with a verified, known date of planting.

According to Greek Mythology, Juno, known variously as the fertility Goddess, the patroness of marriage and the Queen of Sex is associated with figs which is a symbol of fertility.

Figwire, thus, is the process of using the internet to propagate wholesome human relations.  The little icon that you see in your address bar (purple-colored circle and black cap) is derived from a symbol of Juno.
